An Overview of Hospital Safety with Several Case Studies on Managing Hazardous Waste

Garlen will present the general design of hospital safety programs with several case studies on hazardous waste management, including a mercury release which resulted in a TCEQ audit and extensive hazardous materials program risk assessment. This program will focus on identifying several waste streams in hospital settings including EPA RCRA hazardous materials examples. He will also give an overview on the NIOSH guidelines for monitoring health care workers for exposure to chemotherapeutic agents.

Various Hazardous Materials Disposal and Treatment Methods

Skyler will give an overview of the various hazardous materials disposal technologies provided by Veolia Environmental Services. These technologies include safe transport and disposal including incineration, deep well injection, and other methods. Veolia recently was awarded a contract by the US Army to dispose of 1.7 million gallons of hydrosalate, a by product of the neutralization of the VX nerve gas. This material will be incinerated at the Veolia Port Arthur facility.

What to Expect When TCEQ Comes for a Solid Waste Investigation

Dr. Yadav and Ms. Walker will provide an overview of the TCEQ Solid Waste Investigation Process. They will describe waste stream identification, appropriate waste management practices, and reporting and registration mechanisms required by the Solid Waste Regulations. They will give examples of most cited violations, enforcement mechanisms and violation resolutions.

An Overview of the State of Texas Electronic Environmental Reporting System (STEERS)

Mr. Drozd will give an overview of the State of Texas Electronic Environmental Reporting System (STEERS). The use of STEERS is required for Large Quantity Waste Generators in the State of Texas. He will provide an overview of applicability and brief demonstration on the reporting system.

An Overview on the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and Certification in relation to Hazardous Waste Management

Mr. Dror will provide an overview on the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and the Certification process, highlighting how it addresses Hazardous Waste Management. He will describe that standard and the steps necessary to achieve this internationally recognized certification including self audits and certification by an independent Certification Body (Registrar).

Hazardous Waste Management for Industrial Hygienists

In today's competitive workplace, many safety professionals tackle complex Health, Safety, & Environmental Issues. The materials presented provide a primer for managing hazardous waste in compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Hazardous Waste Management encompasses several other acts including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) which provide for hazardous waste site cleanups, reporting, and spill response.
