"Dangerous Mission - High Voltage"
Video Presentation - Produced by the History Channel
They are a ubiquitous sight, marching across the country on massive towers. They are the high voltage lines that power America, and they are maintained by people who risk their lives to make sure the electricity completes its journey.
It is hard to imagine a more precarious situation than the being atop a 250-foot tower, working with a live wire carrying up to 750,000 volts. Unless, of course, you are clutching the skid of a helicopter just a few feet away from those same wires! But for high utility line workers, this is all in a day's work. HIGH VOLTAGE goes on the job and talks to the workers who have spent decades defying death. One fortunate survivor recalls the day when both of his arms were burned off in an instant, and historians reveal how his fate was once common--in fact, in the early days of 20th century, half of all line workers died! And we'll see how the tools of the trade have evolved from the crude days of wooden sticks and rubber gloves to full-body, high-tech metallic mesh suits that can carry 500,000 volts without harming the workers who wear them!
From the training facility to repairing lines damaged in ice storms, this is a fascinating portrait of one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
