Over the last few years, Chevron has developed standardized fitness for duty requirements to identify health-sensitive or physically demanding job functions and develop appropriate evaluations for new hires, job transfers, for cause, returning to work after an injury or illness, and emergency responders.  Documenting the physical requirements of each job is the foundation of the fitness for duty process and medical and functional testing are used when needed. Chevron’s employees are seen as its greatest asset and fitness for duty is one process of several used to help meet the objective of ensuring a safe work environment

Functional Capacity or Structural Integrity of the Musculoskeletal System: Which one has more worth in predicting and preventing injury?

Petti Redding, OTR

Pride Wellness Systems, Inc.

The human musculoskeletal system is designed with a certain alignment and muscular balance.  It hinges on the concept that human beings have evolved to move, not to be static or seated.  With loss of that structural integrity, injury is bound to follow.  But the missing part of this puzzle is the timing.  With structural imbalance, damage is occurring on a daily basis, prior to the actual pain event.  The “damage” lies within muscle fibers at the cellular level, and that damage acts on other soft tissue-joints, tendons, discs, etc., leading to the “injury”.  But what is the greater predictor of injury, the action of the functional ability that just might be sub-threshold pain level, or the structural alignment of the total system, including spine, pelvis, and extremities?  And if we can predict, can we not also prevent?
